The Crawford County Clerk of Courts and the Prothonotary are primarily responsible for maintaining these records and processing requests for access to them.

While Crawford County court records generally document cases from filing through disposition, they may sometimes connect to or expand on other records, such as arrest records and vital records. For example, a criminal trial court record expands on a corresponding arrest record, while a court record maintained for a divorce proceeding will provide details not typically found on a divorce certificate.

Are Crawford County Court Records Public?

Yes, Crawford County court records are public. According to the Pennsylvania Right-To-Know Law, all state and local government agency records, which include court records, are presumed public. Also, Section 3.0 of the Case Records Public Access Policy of the Unified Judicial System of Pennsylvania states that "all case records shall be open to the public." Therefore, under the Right-to-Know Law and judicial policy, individuals may review or request copies of court records in Crawford County.

However, information and court documents designated as confidential under Sections 7.0 and 8.0 of the Case Records Public Access Policy are unavailable for public inspection or duplication. Examples of these documents or information include:

Crawford County Court Records Search

Interested persons may search for or copy case records maintained by Crawford County courts, including the Court of Common Pleas (criminal and civil divisions), Orphans Court, and Magisterial District Courts, using any of the following methods:

Online Access

This involves using an official case search portal to access court records. In Crawford County, two (2) portals serve this purpose. They include the Crawford County Civil Court Case Search and the Pennsylvania Judiciary Web Portal. The Civil Court Case Search is a tool provided by the Prothonotary (the Chief Clerk of the Civil Division of the Court of Common Pleas). It allows users to look up case information and documents for civil cases pending or handled in the Civil Division of the Court of Common Pleas. It offers different search options, including case number, participant name, participant address, reference number, and date of death. The portal also allows users to filter search results by case category, filing date, and participant category (i.e., defendant, applicant, appellant, and claimant).

On the other hand, the Pennsylvania Judiciary Web Portal is a tool provided by the Unified Judicial System of Pennsylvania. It offers public access to various court information, including appellate courts, common pleas courts, and magisterial district court docket sheets through its "Case Information" feature. Individuals can use this portal to search, view, and print docket sheets for both the criminal and civil court divisions of the Crawford County Court of Common Pleas. For the Criminal Division, the portal provides a 'Court Summary Information' report for every case. The search criteria include docket number, date filed, participant name, and more.

Note that access to case information online through these portals may vary by case type.

In-Person Access

The Crawford County Clerks of Court and the Prothonotary maintain court records for the criminal and civil divisions of the Court of Common Pleas, respectively. Consequently, interested persons may visit these offices within official hours (8:30 am - 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday) to search and/or request copies of the court records. Similarly, interested persons may visit a magisterial district court in Crawford County to search for case information and/or obtain copies. Note that search and copy fees may apply.

Fees for Court Records in Crawford County

While individuals can search Crawford County court records online through official portals at no cost, the Crawford County Clerk of Courts, the custodian of criminal court and marriage records, charges fees for searches and copies of case records. Similarly, the Prothonotary (chief clerk of the civil division of the Court of Common Pleas) charges fees for court records. The fees are listed below.

Criminal Records Access in Crawford County

The Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) is responsible for providing official statewide criminal history record checks in Pennsylvania, including Crawford County. It renders this service through its Pennsylvania Access to Criminal History (PATCH) website. There is a $22.00 non-refundable fee for each request (regardless of whether a record is provided). There is also an additional $5.00 non-refundable fee for a notarized copy of the records.

For local criminal case records, access is available online through the Pennsylvania Judiciary Web Portal or in person at the Clerk of Courts office.

Crawford County Probate Records

Crawford County probate records consist of dockets and documents (such as orders, judgments, and decrees) for estate and guardianship matters filed or handled in the Orphans Court. They also include estate documents and wills filed with and maintained by the Crawford County Register of Wills & Recorder of Deeds.

Probate records are generally accessible under the law and the public access policy for Pennsylvania court case records. To this end, interested persons may search for and/or obtain probate records handled by the Crawford County Clerk of Courts, the custodian of the Orphans Court records, either in person at the clerk's office, by mail, or online via the Pennsylvania Judiciary Web Portal (if available). Similarly, wills (including recent ones) and estate documents maintained by the Register of Wills may be accessed through the Online Register of Wills Search or requested in person, by mail, or by email.

Crawford County Family Court Records

Crawford County family court records are documents maintained in divorce, custody, adoption, and support cases handled in the county. The Clerk of Courts and the Prothonotary are responsible for these records for the Orphans Court and Civil Division of the Court of Common Pleas, respectively. While most other family court records are public, adoption records are sealed and cannot be accessed without a court order.

To access Crawford County family court records, such as divorce documents, interested persons can use the Crawford County Civil Court Case Search. To request certified copies, they can contact the Prothonotary orclerk of courts in person, by mail, or by phone. Copy fees apply.

Federal Court Records in Crawford County

Federal court records are documents filed with, accepted by, and maintained by federal courts regarding federal cases handled. These records include documents, such as court orders, judgments, transcripts, exhibits, pleadings, motions, and decrees. The clerk of the federal court in which a case is filed or heard is responsible for the corresponding records.

To look up and/or obtain federal court records in Crawford County, interested persons should contact the clerk's office of the federal courthouse where the case was filed or handled.
